A Work of Art Inside and Out
For a golf community, few statements are more powerful than “Tiger Woods won here.” The Gallery Golf Club (888-437-4800, GalleryGolf.com), located a half-hour north of downtown Tucson within the Dove Mountain community, earned that right when Woods captured the 2008 Accenture World Match Play Championship on the club’s South course. That victory capped a two-year hosting agreement, as the tournament now moves next door, to the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, also part of ?>Dove Mountain.

“Our vision has always been ‘good, friendly people; good, beautiful golf; and good food,’” says general manager Phil Satterfield. “We’re proud to have gotten the opportunity to share with the world’s top golfers what our members have always known.”

Named in honor of the more than 100 works of art that hang in the club, The Gallery Golf Club adds 36 additional works of art in the form of its two golf courses.

The Gallery’s North Course, designed by award-winning architect John Fought and British Open Champion Tom Lehman, is regarded as one of Arizona’s top layouts. It’s nestled against the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains, and delivers breathtaking views in every direction. Deep bunkers and natural rock outcroppings interrupt lush fairways, providing a classic desert golf experience.

Fought’s South Course features subtle and demanding chipping areas and testing greens, providing a links-type feel that makes it unique among desert courses. Competitors and PGA Tour officials consistently praise the strategies and conditioning of the course.

Both courses are fixtures on “Best of Arizona” lists, and both are reserved for the exclusive use of members. Miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the surrounding mountains. The new sports club offers fitness classes and equipment as well as tennis, basketball and volleyball courts and more. Fine dining and fellowship in the award-winning clubhouse complete the privileges available to members.

The Gallery has recently announced availability of 82 new homesites, as well as an innovative one-year membership that allows prospects to enjoy all of the club amenities on a one-year, one-time basis. Please contact the club for more information.

Sisters of the Sun: Longbow and Eagle Mountain
The anticipation builds as your flight descends. You are minutes away from touchdown in a desert paradise. Start with a round at Longbow Golf Club (800-954-6016, LongbowGolf.com), a 20-minute drive from Sky Harbor International Airport.

“Longbow makes for a perfect first round,” says Kris Strauss, director of sales and marketing at OB Sports, “it’s near the airport, and it’s a real desert golf experience, but the groomed native areas make it very playable.”

Acclaimed architect Ken Kavanaugh led a 2003 redesign at Longbow, which is now a fixture in local and national rankings of Arizona courses. Named in honor of the Native American weapon feared for its accuracy and length, Longbow has for a decade hosted the prestigious AJGA Heather Farr Classic. Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan and LPGA sensation Paula Creamer have both won on the course.

“It’s just a great mix of holes,” Strauss says, “and you’ll remember the 16th, with a green that rises as an island in the sand, forever.”

To get a different look at desert golf, make the short drive to Eagle Mountain Golf Club (866-569-8850, EagleMtn.com). Situated in Fountain Hills on a rugged site in the McDowell Mountains, this Scott Miller design is packed with thrills but friendly to golfers.

“This is a fun place to play golf,” Strauss says. “There are a lot of downhill tee shots, incredible views. It’s a little intimidating visually, but what you’ll find is that there are some good bounces out there. We want people to enjoy their rounds, and they do.”

Eagle Mountain saves its best for last. The long par-four finishing hole plays toward Red Mountain, with a tee shot that drops some 150 feet. Water and sand protect the green, and many a match has turned on the finale.

Eagle Mountain is close to Old Scottsdale, and just a short drive from the attractions of Phoenix. The Inn at Eagle Mountain features 42 casitas along the 18th fairway, making for a perfect home base.

Longbow and Eagle Mountain are part of the OB Sports family of golf courses. Visitors can book tee times under each course’s Best Rate Guarantee at LongbowGolf.com and EagleMtn.com.
